Afterschool Program Director

Summary

The Afterschool Program Director plans and leads programs, maintains proper risk management procedures for youth and teens in the afterschool programs. Activities that may take place in an afterschool program include, but are not limited to crafts, outdoor play, cooking and field trips. 

This position follows a fall and spring season curriculum and operates at two locations: Champaign and Urbana. The Program Director may work at one or both locations. 


Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, 21 years of age preferred 
  • Previous youth program leadership experience 
  • Interest in working with people who have disabilities 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Park District staff and the public. 
  • Enthusiasm for working with children and a passion for creating joyful experiences. 
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse groups. 
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to manage schedules and activities effectively. 
  • Resourcefulness and adaptability to handle unexpected situations and changing needs. 
  • Commitment to participant safety and well-being, with a strong understanding of child development and best practices. 

Supervision

The CUSR Afterschool Program Director reports to the Youth and Teen Program Coordinator. The CUSR Afterschool Program Director oversees part-time and seasonal staff. 

Classification 

  • Non-exempt, hourly 
  • Part-time 2 (not to exceed 20 hours per week) 

Training – Can be obtained through the Champaign Park District  

  • First Aid, AED, and CPR Certification 
  • Heads Up Concussion training 
  • Mandated reporter training 
  • Harassment prevention training 
  • Bloodborne pathogen training 
  • Recreation software system training 
  • Drivers training and test for anyone 21 years old and old who will be driving 
  • Facility training 
  • Attend and complete CPI training as requested at the next available training date 

Essential Functions

  • Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of oneself, the public, fellow employees. 
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and discretion in all interactions, including maintaining strict confidentiality regarding staff information, communications from supervisors, and conversations with parents or patrons. Uphold the Park District’s policies and standards for data privacy and confidentiality at all times. 
  • Oversee program execution, promptly addressing issues, and adapting as needed to optimize program quality. 
  • Train, supervise, discipline, and assist in evaluating leaders, assistant directors, and program volunteers to uphold high program standards. 
  • Implement and enforce comprehensive safety protocols and emergency procedures, prioritizing participant and staff well-being. 
  • Conduct daily inspections of program area/location, proactively addressing potential hazards to ensure a safe program environment. 
  • Lead emergency response drills, demonstrating proactive measures for unforeseen situations. 
  • Maintain positive relations with participants, parents, staff, and the public, fostering a welcoming and inclusive program environment. 
  • Maintain an accurate budget for all program expenses, demonstrating financial responsibility and adherence to budgetary constraints. 
  • Be responsible for the purchase, maintenance, and safe and proper use of program supplies, ensuring availability and functionality. 
  • Maintain the program environment in a clean and orderly fashion, contributing to a positive and organized atmosphere. 
  • Ensure an open line of communication with the program’s supervisor regarding all situations concerning the program, participants, and staff. 
  • Communicate effectively with staff, participants, and parents, providing clear and timely information about program activities and updates. 
  • Maintain accurate records of program operations, including participant files, incident/accident reports, attendance, and sign-out sheets. 
  • Take responsibility for parent newsletters, weekly schedules, payroll, required reports, and addressing requests. 
  • Develop program plans for each program and review the plan with the Program Coordinator 
  • Completely plan and lead the program from beginning to end including gathering/purchasing supplies and equipment 
  • Maintain and monitor site first aid kit 
  • Properly handle and dispose of biohazardous materials

Physical Considerations 

  • Engage in active participation during activities, requiring mobility to oversee the activities, address issues, and ensure the smooth execution of events. 
  • Enforce comprehensive safety protocols and emergency procedures, involving physical presence in monitoring and addressing potential safety concerns. 
  • Must be able to be physically active to lead activities and field trips 

Environmental Considerations 

  • May be exposed to all weather conditions 
  • Oversee the overall program environment, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and a positive atmosphere for participants, parents, and staff.
