“2023 State of the Art Ceramics Biennial: BOLD” Curated by Julia Galloway and Jill Oberman Monday, November 20 – Saturday, February 10, 2024 Reception: Thursday, November 30, 5:30–7:30 pm with gallery talk at 6:15 pm Closed: November 23 – 26 for Thanksgiving; December 11 – January 6 for Holiday Break; and January 15 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day This dynamic exhibition, curated by Julia Galloway and Jill Oberman, represents a cross-section of contemporary ceramics by artists who use innovative approaches and provide bold and unexpected ways of experiencing the medium. Galloway is a potter with an active studio practice and a professor of ceramics at the University of Montana, Missoula. She is a recipient of a United States Artist Grant and a Distinguished Scholar at the University of Montana. She is also the 2023 Artist of the Year by the Ceramics Arts Network and Ceramics monthly publication. Jill Oberman is the Curator and Gallery Coordinator at the Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, Montana. She has been the Executive Director of the Carbondale Clay Center, the Clay Studio of Missoula, and Programs and Administration Director at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, and a resident artist at numerous art institutions, notably the Anderson Ranch, the Archie Bray Foundation, and Arrowmont School for Arts and Crafts. The exhibit participants are comprised of artists and faculty from the United States including: Shae Bishop, residing in Bakersville, North Carolina; Brandi Lee Cooper, residing in Edinburg, TX ; Raheleh Filsoofi, residing in Nashville, Tennessee; Del Harrow, residing in Fort Collins, Colorado; Donté Hayes, residing in Cliffwood, New Jersey; Mike Helke, residing in Stillwater, Minnesota; Sydnie Jimenez, residing in Chicago, Illinois; Lauren Mabry, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Alleghany Meadows, residing in Carbondale, Colorado; Brad Miller, residing in Venice, California; Bobby Silverman, residing in Long Island City, New York; and Alex Zablocki, residing in Alma, Michigan. A reception will be on Thursday, November 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm with a gallery talk by Galloway and Oberman at 6:15 pm. We will have music by Cobra Lounge Trio. Giertz Gallery hours are 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Wednesday, 10 am to 5 pm on Thursday, and noon to 2 pm Saturday. The gallery will be closed from 5 pm on November 22 through November 26 for Thanksgiving Break; December 11 through January 6 for Winter Break; and January 15 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. To find the gallery during our fall construction period, we suggest using the B7 parking lot on the south end of campus. Enter through Door X2 and turn left. Take the first uphill ramp on your right (east of the library stairs) and then the two ramps directly north of the stairs to the highest point on the first floor, where the gallery is located.
